Paper Mill Energy Savings Opportunities, UK

Client: Major Paper Manufacturer
Location: South West, U.K.
Date: 2004
Project: Energy Savings Opportunities Assessment

The Paper Mill manufactures high quality water marked paper, as used by banks for bond certificates.

Abricon undertook an assessment of energy saving opportunities at the Mill, funded by the Carbon Trust.

The Mill has a strong track record in managing its energy consumption and over the last 20 years has incorporated many best practice technologies.

The focus of the assessment was therefore centred on the non-technical, management focussed aspects of utility management. This identified a number of areas where the Mill’s management team could improve its efficiency through applying better low and no cost techniques. Central to this was developing a metering strategy that allowed the steam and electrical consumption of the Mill’s 2 paper machines to be more accurately understood and compared.

This identified wide variations in efficiency between certain, nominally identical, processes undertaken by each machine.

Using this information, the Mill was able to set up process improvement teams to investigate these variations.
